What is The Gnarly Neon 5K?

It’s only the coolest most colorful way to spend a Saturday morning. Who needs rest and sleeping in? You’ve more than met your quota for both, now it’s time to have some fun in a 5k event that benefits children and adults with developmental disabilities and will leave you looking like you got in a color fight with thousands of your newest friends!

Is the color safe?

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: The color is a combination of organic dye and corn starch. It’s designed to stain clothes and skin and that’s it. No rash, no burn, just colored clouds of YAY!

It should be known that inhalation of any particulate especially over the course of several days is unhealthy. Unlike most manufacturing plants, this color does not contain chemicals known to the state of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm, and your exposure will be no longer than for a few minutes. We do strongly encourage and openly invite anyone who has concerns about inhaling color to bring a dust mask or activated charcoal filter. You would really only need it as you are passing through the color zones, and it could be another memento or souvenir.

Will it stain my car?

Yes. There is a good chance the color could transfer from you or your clothes to anything you touch including your car. We think of it as a reminder of what fun we had, but not everyone thinks like us. If you want to minimize the chances of your car seat, steering wheel, and radio dial getting Gnarly’d, you should minimize your exposure to them. Cover your seats in a towel or old blanket, and/or bring a change of clothes, cover your floor board and carpet with a towel, and wash your hands before touching anything you want to remain pristine. Take all the same precautions you would for keeping sand and water out of an off your car after a day at the beach.

Is there a dress code?

Yes, wear white. Disregard the “after Labor Day” social convention not to, and remember it isn’t a sign of surrender; the color will stain a white shirt better than any other. Make sure it is a white shirt you won’t mind becoming a consortium of Gnarly Neon colors.

No one will be turned away or disallowed to run the race if they aren’t sporting the most neutral colored shirt, however they’re commitment to having fun will be questioned. We firmly believe if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing white.

Will the color stain my hair?

Depending on the tone and pigment of your hair, it may. For those with fair hair, natural or artificial blondes and platinum we suggest using leave in conditioner or wearing a white hair cover. Or not. There is nothing wrong with sporting the retro 90’s punk rocker look. In fact, in Chico, no one will question it, however we cannot condone getting facial piercings just to complete the look or listening to 90’s punk for that matter. Mohawks are another story.

The color will wash out with time and persistence. And the sooner you rinse, the less likely it is to stain.

Is there an age limit?

Yes, both ways. The age ceiling is “still breathing” and the age floor is “in utero”.

We jest. So long as you can cross the finish line you are welcome to participate. With that in mind though, parents with young children need to keep in mind this event, while not timed, still has defined hours.
